Apple and Intel Strike a US Chip Deal, Sending Intel Surging

Intel may have just landed its most important customer in years: Apple. President Trump confirmed on Wednesday that Apple and Intel struck a deal for Intel to manufacture some of Apple's chips on US soil, and Intel stock jumped more than 10 percent on the news. Neither company has confirmed it.
This would be a big turn for both. Apple designs its own chips but has them built almost entirely by TSMC in Taiwan, and a deal with Intel would move some of that manufacturing into the US, fitting the political push to bring chip production home. For Intel, which has struggled for years as a foundry, landing Apple would be a stamp of credibility it badly needs.
The reported arrangement, per the Wall Street Journal, follows more than a year of talks and would make Intel a contract manufacturer for lower-end Apple silicon, the chips in cheaper iPhones, iPads, and Macs, rather than the top processors that stay with TSMC. It is a foot in the door, not the whole house. Apple declined to comment and Intel said it would not discuss a potential agreement, so the specifics are still unconfirmed.
Intel was the obvious winner, up double digits on the report, since a marquee customer is exactly what its turnaround story has lacked. The deal also fits a pattern. Intel is suddenly at the center of nearly every big US chip move, a 25 billion dollar fab with Tesla and SpaceX, a production tie-up with Nvidia, and cloud work with Google. After years as the laggard, Intel is being pulled back into the middle of the industry.
The catch is execution. Intel's foundry has missed deadlines and yield targets before, and Apple is the most demanding customer in tech, so a preliminary deal is not a finished one. If Intel delivers, it validates the whole US-manufacturing push and reshapes the foundry market that TSMC dominates. If it stumbles, it is another false dawn. Either way, the symbolism of Apple building chips in America is large.
So Intel, written off by many, may have just won the customer that changes its story. Apple chips made in the US, a stock up double digits, a deal neither side will confirm yet. The details matter and are not public. But the direction, chips coming home, is the theme of the year.
