Microsoft Sells Claude to Customers but Cuts It Internally

This is the frenemy problem in AI. Microsoft is the biggest backer of OpenAI, Anthropic's main rival, yet its customers keep asking for Claude, which has become a favorite for coding and complex analysis. So Microsoft now offers Claude in Copilot Chat as a selectable model, because not offering it loses business. Internally, though, it would rather its engineers build on its own stack.
Two moves, opposite directions. On the customer side, Claude is now selectable in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat for analysis, document understanding, and structured content. On the internal side, Microsoft is canceling most Claude Code licenses across its Experiences and Devices division, the group behind Windows, Office, Outlook, and Teams, by June 30, steering those engineers to GitHub Copilot CLI. Reports frame the internal cut as cost and control driven. Claude Code is powerful and not cheap.
Microsoft traded near 394 dollars, with the internal switch barely a blip for a company its size. The more telling signal is demand. Anthropic's run-rate revenue has blown past 40 billion dollars, a lot of it powered by Claude Code, and stories like Uber reportedly burning its entire 2026 AI-tools budget on Claude Code and Cursor in four months show how fast usage, and spend, can run. Popular enough that even a competitor has to resell it.
The takeaway is that Claude has become something Microsoft cannot fully route around. Offering it in Copilot is a concession to customer demand, even while Microsoft pushes its own tools and bankrolls OpenAI. For Anthropic, being the model rivals are forced to carry is the strongest position in enterprise software, and a useful data point weeks before its IPO. The risk is dependence on platforms that would rather you were not there. Microsoft can promote Copilot and demote Claude whenever it chooses.
So Anthropic is winning and exposed at the same time. Good enough that Microsoft sells Claude to its customers, threatening enough that Microsoft strips it from its own engineers. That tension is the whole story of Claude right now, indispensable to users, inconvenient to rivals. Watch whether the customer demand or the platform politics wins out.
