The Big AI Models Promised for June Still Have Not Shipped
Everyone promised a model this month. As of the third weekend in June, almost nobody has shipped. Google's Gemini 3.5 Pro, xAI's Grok 5, and Anthropic's Mythos were all teed up for this window, and all three are still behind the curtain. The summer of AI launches is running late.
Back in May, the hype was loud. At Google I/O on May 19, Sundar Pichai showed Gemini 3.5 Pro and told the crowd to give him until next month. xAI pointed to a second-quarter Grok 5. Anthropic previewed Mythos. The expectation was a June stacked with frontier launches. June is nearly over.
The slips are adding up. Gemini 3.5 Pro still has no release date or model ID, with only the faster, cheaper Gemini 3.5 Flash actually live. Grok 5 is still training on xAI's Colossus 2 supercomputer, and prediction market Polymarket puts the odds of a release before June 30 at well under a third. Anthropic's Mythos is locked to about 50 cybersecurity partners and not available to regular developers, partly because its most capable models are tangled in the US export-control fight. Promised, previewed, not shipped.
There is no single stock that moves on a delayed model, but the pattern matters. The AI trade runs on expectations as much as products, and a wave of next-month launches that keeps slipping tests how much of the hype is real versus scheduled. Google has the most riding on it, since Gemini 3.5 Pro is its answer to GPT-5.5 and Claude Opus, and every week it stays in preview is a week rivals keep the lead.
The delays say something about where AI is. The easy gains from just shipping a bigger model are getting harder, frontier training runs take longer and cost more, and safety and security reviews now slow releases that used to be quick. Anthropic's Mythos sitting behind a wall is the clearest example, a model good enough to find zero-day vulnerabilities is also too sensitive to ship freely. The race is still on, the cadence is just slowing.
So the loudest month for AI promises has been quiet on AI deliveries. Three flagship models teased for June, none in general release yet, the clock running down. The labs will ship eventually. The interesting part is that even they are finding the frontier harder to reach on schedule. Watch for Gemini first.
